Civil Requirements for Marriages

1. A priest or deacon ministering in the Diocese of Lansing may celebrate a marriage ceremony only for persons who enter marriage in compliance with the civil law of the State of Michigan or of the civil jurisdiction in which it is to be celebrated. (The norms of canon law and liturgical law must also be observed.)

2. Before a priest or deacon assists at any Catholic wedding in the diocese, the couple must present a civil marriage license to him.

3. If a priest, deacon, or party seeking Catholic marriage believes that a requirement of civil law is inconsistent with the requirements or freedoms given in canon law, that person is to consult the chancery.
