5.G.4.4 Recording and Certifying Baptism Occurring After a Civil Adoption is Completed

1. All persons authorized to handle baptismal registers in the Diocese of Lansing are to be especially knowledgeable of the following norms for Inscription of Adopted Children in Baptismal Registers, issued November 8, 2000. A copy is to be placed with the sacramental registers in each parish. [1]

2. At the prescription of the episcopal conference, “for children baptized after their adoption has been finalized, the following information shall be entered in the [baptismal] register:

   a. “the Christian name of the child as designated by the adoptive parent(s);

   b. “the name of the adoptive parent(s);

   c. “the date and place of birth;

   d. “the names of the sponsor(s) selected by the adoptive parent(s);

   e. “the place and date of baptism;

   f. “the name of the minister performing the baptism, and

   g. “the fact of the adoption but not the names of the natural parents.

   h. “Baptismal certificates issued by the parish for adopted children will be no different than other baptismal certificates. No mention of the fact of adoption shall be made on the baptismal certificate.”
